How The Game Of Golf Started

The ancient origin of the game of golf has sparked off lots of debate among historians. Although the modern golf as we know it originated in Scotland in the 15th century, some historians have traced the game back to the Roman empire before the first century. Others assert that the game of golf is a modern form of the "chinwa" (a Chinese game played around the eighth century which involves striking a ball with a stick with the aim of putting it in a hole). Some other games like the "cambuka" which was played England, "cambot" played in France and "Koven" which was played in the Netherlands have all been cited by different historians as the progenitor of the modern golf.

However modern golf originated in Scotland, the first written record of on golf was when James II banned the game of golf, the ban was later lifted when James IV a successor to James II became a golfer. Golf clubs were first recorded in 1503-1504: "For golf clubbers and balls to the King that he played it with." In 1764, the standard 18 hole golf course was created at St Andrew's. The oldest golf course has been traced to Musselburgh Links in East Lothian, Scotland. Records show that golf was being played in Musselburgh links as early as 2nd March 1672, the Guinness book of world records certifies this.

The oldest golf rules were compiled in 1744 for The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers which was formally known as "the Company of Gentlemen Golfers" in Scotland. The open championship tournament which dates back to 1860 is the worlds oldest golf tournament in existence, the open championship tournament was first played on 17 October 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club, in Ayrshire, Scotland, with Scottish golfers. The earliest golf players in America were Scotsmen from Dunfermline, named John Reid and Robert Lockhart. These two scots first demonstrated golf in the United States in 1888. John Reid also set up America's first golf club(Saint Andrew's golf club)in Yonkers, New York.

Golf Etiquette – A Mirror Of The Inner Self

Long before golf became a popular game, the Irish novelist Laurence Sterne had the following to say about good manners.

“Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guides our manners”.

Use your own expectations of others as a guideline to essential etiquette on the course.

Golf, like other sports, depends a great deal on what is happening in your mind. So, be aware of the powerful role that your thinking is playing in every aspect of your game. Your deep and concentrated thought about your interaction with your fellow players is also crucial. In this way, golf is an extension of your day-to-day living, a mirror of the person you are exhibiting to the world.

Many of the rules of golf are well-known. Consider examples like:

• Filling up divots

• Repairing the damage caused by your ball going into a bunker

• Restricted movements around the greens including the making good of spike marks

• Driving the golf cart so that it causes the least damage

• Careful handling of equipment like rakes and flagpoles

• Letting faster players through

• Genuine honesty in a game based on self-supervision without the aid of a referee

These requirements are well-known to the new golfer, picked up with little effort.

Good manners on the course, however, go beyond the mere adherence to a set of familiar rules. It involves an inner conviction that sport and in particular golf is not only played for the joy of the game. It also builds character, it enriches your life, and it makes you a better person. Examples of this kind of conduct are:

Golf tricks to master the golf craft!

Played enough golf to get the basics right? It's time to level up now!

Although golf is a lot about getting your stance and swing right, there are certain things that you can add to your kitty in order to improve your game even further. When you are able to control more factors in the game, there are more chances of driving the golf ball straight into the hole!

To get you started, here are a few simple golf tricks that will refine your game and help you master the golf craft one step at a time.

Get Behind The Ball

Whenever you’re preparing your first swing, what do you do take aim? Some people like to align their shoulders to the target; some players even align their legs in a left or right position. But to really get the hang of the right direction, you need to get behind the ball and funnel down your perspective towards the aim.

To do this, you can use the clubface as well. Just hold it aligned to the aim while you’re standing behind the ball and then adjust your posture for the shot. Remember that this has to be done before taking the stance. In this way, you’ll get a clear view of the aim and your body will steer in the right direction.

Solidify Your Stance

Contrary to the general belief, changing your stance around with a change in the club is actually not good. You need to maintain a firm stance throughout the game. Whenever you hit the ball, a constantly maintained stance helps you keep the direction correct.

At the same time, be wary that you’re allowed to make minor adjustments that your body needs for the best stroke. A solid stance doesn’t have to come at the cost of discomfort; it has to come at the cost of precision, however that works out for you.

Ride the Wind

The best way to get out of a windy situation is to use it to your advantage. When players try to hit the ball against the wind, they lose out on the target more often than not.

To ride the wind productively, hit the ball in a manner that the wind helps it along its way towards the aim. This can be done by hitting the ball in a slightly anti-wind direction, which will make the ball regain its fairway. Alternatively, you can hit the ball towards the wind to achieve a longer draw and a better ball flight.

Hit on the Pro Side

The dynamics of the golf ball teach us that it is more susceptible to go towards the hole when it steered towards the side that’s higher than the hole. The higher side is the pro side. This is because the golf ball doesn’t have a natural tendency to travel upward direction and if your shots are going on the lower side, you’re actually helping the ball away from the hole.

Chip it Crisp and Solid

In the end, chipping the ball could be the deciding factor for you. The best way to chip the ball is to make the hit solid yet crisp. This can be mastered by transferring your body balance to your left leg and hold the club firmly for the hit. This will help you gain the best position to control the chip and also make your judgment immaculate.
